Mumbai bloodbath
We are deeply shocked and horrified at the bloody mayhem in Mumbai, which has claimed more than a hundred and ninty lives and caused grievous injuries to several hundred people, besides sending a wave of panic and terror across South Asia and beyond. We convey our profound feelings of sorrow and sympathies to the grieving families of the unfortunate victims of this heinous crime and express our solidarity with them.
Presented are three statements made in the aftermath of the horrific incidents of terrorism in India's premier city, Mumbai. Communist Mazdoor Kissan Party (CMKP) of Pakistan, Various Indian and Pakistani journalists and academicians, and other Indian and Pakistani citizens call for peace and justice to the victims of this horrific tragedy. Pragoti presents them in this composite post.
A debate has raged among the sections of the left in the US. Marginalised but vocal, small but intellectual; the American Left has tried to focus on the correct approach toward gaining political space during a time when America is in the midst of a financial and housing crisis. In the midst of it, there is also the matter of the US presidential elections. It is clear that the voice of the left is represented by Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney and Independent candidate, Ralph Nader. Shunned by the mainstream media, starved of electoral campaigning resources and kept away from the political discourse in a plutocracy of sorts, the Left candidates are in a losing battle for relevance. Some leftist intellectuals have therefore adopted an approach that calls for defeating the hard right and looking toward a Barack Obama victory, opening as it would newer avenues for the Left in the political discourse (as they call it), while others call this approach still-born, finding it difficult to endorse Obama as his positions offer no substantial change from McCain's.
Intellectuals Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn call for tactical voting for Obama in Real News videos; James Petras however takes a vote-Nader/McKinney line; and others weigh in their opinions through articles in Counterpunch, the Guardian etc. All of these are posted here and courtesies due to the publishers.
Pragoti publishes three articles on the financial meltdown of big American financial companies such as the Lehman Brothers and actions by the US Federal Reserve. a) Paul Krugman in the New York Times, b) Joseph Stiglitz in the Guardian, c) William K. Tabb in the Monthly Review apart from attached articles (by Mihir Rakshit and Jan Kregel) on the Sub-Prime crisis the fountain-head for the current meltdown.
Pragoti publishes first reactions to the NSG waiver given by the cartel to India for enabling civil nuclear cooperation with other nuclear suppliers in the world. Pragoti has for long opposed the nuclear deal and the reasons adduced by the government to push in the deal through. Pragoti also opposes any initiative by the government to haul in nuclear fuel for the purposes of nuclear weapon testing. Here, reactions from MK Bhadrakumar, a career IFS officer, who questions the government rationale to hold China responsible for the NSG waiver complications; Brahma Chellaney, a security expert who suggests the NSG waiver text is a sure shot goalpost shift from the PM's promises to Indian parliament; press communique from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), who have led the opposition to the nuclear deal from the forefront of the political spectrum; are carried. Pragoti brings the first reactions to the revelations made from secret letters exchanged between the US Administration and the US Congress over the Indo-US Nuclear Deal. The revelations establish it clearly that all that tainted prime minister Manmohan Singh had promised to the Indian parliament were lies and that the US Administration has been lying low with its interpretations of the 123 Agreement. Pragoti has always believed clearly that the 123 Agreement is in consonance with the notorious Hyde Act, which impinges directly on sovereign India's foreign policy. The letters only go on to confirm that the US government and the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh have used the strategem of double-crossing to hoodwink the critics of the deal. The clarifications issued by the Bush administration are available at http://www.hcfa.house.gov/110/press090208.pdf .

More voices add to the strong dissent toward the Indo-US Nuclear Deal and the Prime Minister's decision to dishonour the parliament's no to the same. A set of individuals write an open letter to the PM and B.S.Rao of the India News Network writes a stinging piece on the same issue.
