Small Savings Schemes in India and the Saradha Scam

Saradha.jpg

One of the features of the current Saradha scam which is distinct from other such scams like the Sanchayita, in West Bengal, is that majority of the people who deposited money in Saradha are rural poor people. Why did rural poor people keep their money in fraudulent companies like Saradha and not in small savings schemes of the government? This is a very important question which needs to be looked at to pin point the role of the central government and state governments in facilitating the activities of companies like Saradha.

The Neo-liberal Paralysis

The pursuance of neo-liberal ideology has run out of policy options to take the Indian economy out of the current crisis. That is the message of this year's union budget.

Defeat This Neoliberal Adventurism

03.jpg

What the barrage of criticisms of the central government from across the political spectrum - over the mega corruption scandals and relentless price rise - could not achieve in the past couple of years, was accomplished by a couple of adverse reports in the western media. Time magazine’s description of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the “underachiever” who was "unwilling to stick his neck out on reforms” made him sit up and show that he was after all not “asleep at the wheel”.

FDI in Retail: Benefiting Neo-liberalism, Harming People

FDI_Retail.jpg

The decision of the UPA government to open up the retail sector in the country to FDI is an example of the basic fallacy in the 'growth fetishism' of the votaries of neo-liberalism. While the government argues that this move will generate investor confidence in the Indian economy and lead the country to high growth, in reality the problems of the common people- deprivation, poverty and hunger- far from being ameliorated will actually be intensified.

Increase in Diesel Prices: Wrong Policy, Wrong Logic

diesel.jpg

The recent announcement by the government to increase the price of diesel by Rs 5/- is wrong. Over the last two years, the Indian economy is reeling under high inflation, which has not subsided even after major interventions by the RBI. In such a situation, increasing the price of diesel, which is an intermediate commodity for all kinds of production, is only going to give rise to a cascading effect on inflation.

The Student movement, Higher education and the End of neoliberal triumphalism

14th All India Conf SFI 1.jpg

C. P. Chandrasekhar's inaugural address at the 14th All India Conference of the Student Federation of India
This 14th All-India conference of the Students Federation of India is being held at a critical time in recent history. Over the last five years a deep crisis has overcome the metropolitan core of modern capitalism, and not just its poorer periphery. Never before since the Great Depression has the economic and political viability of capitalism been as much under challenge as it is today. And the legitimacy of modern capitalism as a system that can deliver a socially and historically acceptable minimum standard of life for much of its inhabitants is once again in question.
