Hundreds of SFI activists staged a solidarity protest in front of the Egyptian Embassy today. This protest was held to express solidarity with the “Million March” in Cairo and in support of the ongoing movement for democracy in Egypt. Scores of students, holding placards such as “Husni Mubarak get lost”, “We support the Egyptian people” marched towards the Egyptian Embassy. The demonstration culminated in a public meeting in front of the Egyptian Embassy gate. The demonstration was addressed by the Delhi State President of SFI, Roshan Kishore. Comrade Suhasini Ali from the AIDWA, Sudhanva Deshpande from Jan Natya Manch and Ex-JNUSU President Albeena Shakil also addressed the gathering.
The speakers expressed solidarity with the protesting people and condemned the ongoing repression by the Mubarak regime. They also condemned the role of United States in the Arab region and its support to the dictatorial regime. The speakers highlighted the increasing inequalities and anti-people policies under globalization as a main factor behind the protests. They also condemned the role of the Indian government which has not shown any support for the pro-democracy struggle. The demonstrators condemned the strategic alliance that the Indian government had pursued along with US and Israel, which was the reason behind the lack of solidarity with the people of Egypt.
The protestors resolved to stand in support with the people struggling for democracy in autocratic Egypt and other countries in the Arab/ North African World.
