The pioneering radical historian of the United States, Howard Zinn, is no more. He passed away on 27 January at the age of 87. His magnum opus,‘A People’s History of the United States’, which was inspired by A. L. Morton’s ‘A People’s History of England’, opened up a new field of historiography before students of American and imperial history. It remains essential reading for all those who hope to change the world. Throughout his life, Zinn struggled as a scholar and as a fighter for social justice, for equality based on complete redistribution of material resources, for human emancipation.
