There are few magazines/ journals in India which have survived and thrived for years. There is perhaps only one which has reflected the history and followed the events and trends in political economy, academia since independence. And that must be the Economic and Political Weekly, whose precursor, the Economic Weekly was edited by an individual, well respected by his peers, be they in academia, in government, in administration or any in the thinking circles. It was the character of this individual and the zeal of those close to him that made the EW what it was and the EPW built on the same. Ashok Mitra, a long time contributor to the magazine, in his inimitable style writes about Sachin Chaudhuri, the first editor of the EW/EPW.
