Guilt by Participation

Sonal Shah's Membership Has Expired, writes Vijay Prashad in a follow up to his article on Shah and her past associations with the Hindu Right earlier. Sonal Shah, for those not in the know, serves on the advisory board for president-elect Barack Obama's presidential transition team. The earlier article can be found here.

Barack Obama’s victory in the U. S. presidential election warmed the hearts of millions around the world. When Jesse Jackson wept, I cried too. I had worked for Jackson’s campaign in 1988. With Jackson’s defeat came the long hibernation of American progressivism. Obama’s victory awoke that tradition. A few days later Obama began to announce his transition team. The names were not from the progressive tradition, but from the more cautious, even conservative side of the Democratic Party. In the list I saw the name Sonal Shah.

That day, I wrote an essay for counterpunch.org calling attention to Sonal Shah’s affiliations with various Hindutva groups. In this viral age, essays such as this leave their locales and take on a life of their own. This one created a little kerfuffle. People excited by the Obama victory and by the ascension of an Asian American to a position of authority were miffed that I had rained on their parade. Some claimed that I had stooped to the Sarah Palin tactic of guilt by association. Just because her parents are closely affiliated with the Hindutva groups does not mean she is associated with them, they said. I agree. Sonal Shah released a statement against “baseless and silly reports” on the Internet. She forthrightly pointed out that her “personal politics have nothing in common with the views espoused by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) or any such organization.” The VHP and the RSS are well known to spread hate and to have participated in ghastly acts of violence within India against Muslims, Christians, and oppressed castes, not to speak of spreading the general misogyny that their ideology preaches.

Sonal Shah’s statement is gratifying, but unpersuasive. The VHP’s Shyam Tiwari recently said, “Sonal was a member of the VHP of America at the time of the [2001 Kutch, Gujarat] earthquake. Her membership has expired.” This was eight years after the 1993 Gujarat riots, when the VHP had an active, and ghastly role. Ms. Shah was 33 years old then. Her parents were active in Hindutva organizations. How could she not have known of their role, and the controversy surrounding them? She was not from an apolitical household, but an activist one. I brought up her parents only to suggest that she cannot claim now that she was ignorant of the VHP’s role in India. She must have known. And yet she participated in its activities. There were a host of other agencies that raised money for the earthquake survivors. All the earthquake survivors: credible media reports showed that the money raised by the VHP did not go to Muslim survivors, only Hindu ones (for example, “Communalizing Relief: VHP seizes earthquake opportunity,” Statesman, Kolkata, 12 February 2001 and Vijay Dutt, “Discrimination in Distribution of Relief against Dalits in Gujarat Causes Concern,” Hindustan Times, 27 February 2001). This is hardly an act of charity.

The VHP says Ms. Shah left the organization in 2001. Three events from 2004 bear mention:

(1) Ms. Shah delivered a keynote address at the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh young conference. The HSS is the U. S. branch of the RSS. The University of Chicago’s Martha Nussbaum describes the RSS as “possibly the most successful fascist movement in any contemporary democracy.” The RSS “guru” (teacher) M. S. Golwalkar wrote glowingly about Nazi “race pride,” and called it a “good lesson for us in Hindusthan to learn and profit by.”

(2) Ms. Shah delivered a keynote address at an Ekal Vidyalaya conference in Florida. The Ekal Vidyalaya’s are schools set up in tribal areas. The RSS’s Chief of Service work, Premchand Goel, said that the RSS and the VHP run “thousands of Ekal Vidyalayas.” One Ekal Vidyalaya teacher, Mohan Lal, told Frontline reporter, T. K. Rajalakshmi, “We go for the RSS shakha [branch] meetings regularly. The teachers are selected only if they subscribe to the RSS way of thought.”

(3) On her behalf, her brother Anand Shah received an award from the Gujarat government in the presence of Chief Minister Narendra Modi. When Mr. Modi became Chief Minister of the State in 2001 was the first RSS pracharak (volunteer) to be in the position. The RSS celebrated its victory. Human Rights Watch’s 2002 report calls attention to the way the RSS and Mr. Modi have used Gujarat as “Hindutva’s laboratory,” stacking the higher administration with RSS-VHP cadre. No Muslim police officer has a field posting. As Frontline reporter Praveen Swami wrote at the time, “Chief Minister Narendra Modi has become something of a hero for many Hindus because he presided over the pogrom.”

At none of these events did Ms. Shah or her brother raise their voices for the broken hearts and bodies, the survivors and victims of the 2002 pogrom in Gujarat. By 2004, even mainstream human rights organizations and media outlets had recognized that the Gujarat riots were state-engineered, and that their author was Narendra Modi. In 2005, the U. S. government refused to allow Mr. Modi a visa on these grounds. And yet, Ms. Shah received an award given by Mr. Modi. The novelist Amitav Ghosh refused to be considered for the Commonwealth Prize in 2001 because it commemorated imperialism. That is a sign of sound moral judgment. To have taken an award from a man who conducted a pogrom is a sign of moral turpitude.

It is a dark cold day if high expectations are to be dashed by such convoluted ethics.

congratulations

Vijay Prashad needs to be congratulated for taking a principled stand on the issue. Sonal Shah belongs to the creed of NRI hindutvadis, who are the biggest source of funds for the RSS project in India. While they project the "modern" face of the RSS-VHP-Bajrang Dal in the US, their funds flow into the tribal hinterlands of India to sustain the hindutva fascist machine, which is currently busy in the ethnic cleansing of Christians in Kandhmahal, Orissa. The skeletons which continue to tumble out of the ongoing probe into the Malegaon blasts - the sadhvi, the serving and retired army officers and the "shankaracharya" - point towards the use of such funds for organising terror attacks against innocent civilians. Unless Sonal Shah comes clean with her position vis-a-vis these fascistic terrorists of the RSS-VHP-Bajrang Dal, she will continue to be criticised for her association with the hindutva brigade.

Under Pressure, Shah Renounces Hindu Group

http://lostintransition.nationaljournal.com/2008/12/shah-renounces.php

"In 2002, Gujarat suffered one of the most profound tragedies in its long history, when extremist political leaders, including some associated with the VHP, incited riots that resulted in the deaths of thousands. Had I been able to foresee the role of the VHP in India in these heinous events, or anticipate that the VHP of America could possibly stand by silently in the face of its Indian counterpart's complicity in the events of Gujarat in 2002 -- thereby undermining the American group's cultural and humanitarian efforts with which I was involved -- I would not have associated with the VHP of America."
.....
" "I need your help," wrote Shah. "This is gaining legs as the National Journal also picked it up and likely Fox. I need to moblize [sic] people against the leftists and the right wing. There is a likely chance that they will ask me to resign as team does not need my publicity."

:):):):) poor woman!

Vijay Prashad's article is pure nonsense

This is a smear campaign run by Vijay Prashad and his cronies. Aziz Hanifa pointed out the balatant lies being propagated by Vijay Prashad in the India Abroad magazine such as intentional mis-representations of Enron and Anderson Consulting. Several prominent citizens published an article in Outlook India magazine describing Vijay Prashads efforts as a 'hate campaign' and endorsed Sonal Shah. Recently, USINPAC sent a letter to Obama saying that this was a smear campaign, and they too endorsed Sonal Shah. Please see letter below:

Washington DC

Dear President-elect Obama and the Presidential

Transition Team:

As you by now are aware, a highly accomplished member of your team, Sonal Shah, has been targeted in a smear campaign in which she is falsely accused of supporting groups that condone violence against Christians and Muslims. In fact, former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) even accused you, President-elect Obama as "condoning an organization that supports terrorism aimed at Muslims and Christians."

The organization these radical groups speak of is the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which organized many fundraisers and charity drives in Hindu temples across the United States following the tragic 2001 earthquakes in Gujarat, India. Ms. Shah, in an effort to give back to her community, participated in these drives.
But Ms. Shah, in her actions even more than her words, has proven that she is a dedicated, civil servant, not a radical extremist. After observing the 2001 earthquake tragedy, Shah co-founded Indicorps, a non-religious, non-political organization that sends young Indian-Americans to volunteer in poor, remote villages in India. During her work at Google Inc., she supported small and medium sized enterprise development in the developing world.

While some members of the Indian-American community may have objected to her appointment, I want to assure you that the majority of Indian-Americans of different religious background support her and what she represents for America. We believe she is highly deserving of the position she has been given in the Presidential Transition Team and look forward to watching her continued success. Organizations like USINPAC work to increase the presence of Indian-Americans like Sonal in the public sector, because we believe that they can bring the same work ethic, innovation, and success to our government as they have to the fields of medicine, technology, and engineering.

We hope that you will continue to support Sonal Shah for and her commitment to public service and to her country.

Sincerely,
Sanjay Puri, Chairman, USINPAC
& the members of USINPAC

USINPAC represents NRI Hindutva

The USINPAC representative, Abhijit, has tried to rescue Sonal Shah's credentials by invoking the USINPAC. however, what are the credentials of USINPAC? it is a front of NRI hindutva vadis who have modelled themselves after the Zionists in the US and try to influence US policy by bribing American politicians and licking their boots. it is the same bunch of crooks who were pushing the Indo-US nuclear deal. it is no wonder that these self-serving people are issuing character certificates to Sonal Shah.

Mr Abhijit Bagal, Your

Mr Abhijit Bagal, Your response is ridiculous and has a striking similarity with the Pakistani extremist organization Jamaat-ud-Dawa. Because, after all, the banned JuD in Pakistan also argues in the same way that they are not terrorist organization but it is “involved in running schools, clinics and providing charitable relief to the victims of earthquakes such as the one happened in Baluchistan recently” . But it has been established that such activities are only a camouflage to cover up its nefarious and ugly face of terrorism.

Mr Vijay Prashad raises a central question as to what was Sonal Shah’s association with an organization that was butchering innocent Muslim people in Gujrat. What was she doing when the VHP which is front wing of its parent body called the RSS, a hydra-headed monster? Are you able to disprove what Vijay Prashad has clearly established? The very fact that Sonal Shah has now disassociated herself from VHP in America proves Vihay prashad was not resorting to any smear campaign as alleged by Sanjay Puri whom you have referred to.

Instead of answering this key question, Mr Sanjay Puri, Chairman, USINPAC is side-stepping it and talking like the same way Jamaat-Ud-Dawa has been arguing in Pakistan to defend itself to cover up its terroristic face. It is a known fact that the Fascist Communalism as represented by RSS-VHP and terrorism are the two sides of the same coin and they feed on each other as rightly pointed out by Sitaram Yechury of the CPI(M) . But what is common between them is now more glaringly VISIBLE IN THAT they both use the same argument of their so-called charitable relief to the erathquake victims to cover up their ugly faces. Shame on you, Mr Abhijit Bagal !!

Finally, you are so worried about the so-called “hate-campaign” of Vijay Prashad against Sonal shah ,which is not all true. But were you and your cohorts not the ones who resorted to the hate campaign against the Muslims both during Ayodhya issue and Post-Godhra Gujrat carnage which has led to the present terror strikes in a viciuos circle ? Now you feel the pinch of "hate-campaign"

Excellent reply by R Maran, more..

Dear Maran,
You have hit the nail on the head. An excellent reply.
It is indeed the case that extremist organisations tend not only to feed off from their extremist rhetoric, they also fish in troubled backwaters of poverty and disaster to create an impression of "civic righteousness" about themselves. This is precisely the case with both the Jamat-ud-Dawa and the Sangh Parivar's various branches and units, especially the VHP for e.g in Kandhamal. After all, in Kandhamal, the VHP and other missionary outfits have been in conflict for decades to capture the hegemonic space that should ideally be captured by the secular state and other progressive civil society organisations.
It is good to see that Sonal Shah is repudiating her past, but it seems a very hollow statement owing to the fact that she saw nothing wrong in associating with the VHP even after every sane reporter in India had written about the VHP's role since Babri Masjid, and various other omissions and commissions of Hindu right wing rule under the BJP in India.
Is it really the Gujarat riots that have forced Sonal Shah's hands in admitting her sense of judgement or is it that now she faces a two pronged attack on her associations (from the sane left already and the more powerful right wing representative Rick Santorum), that she sees an instrumental reason in dissociating herself with VHP-A? Whatever might be the case, Vijay Prashad has proved to be very correct in pointing towards Sonal Shah's indiscretions and the skeletons in her Hindu Rightwing closet.

Thank you,srinir

Thank you very much for your response, srinir. I share all view points in this regard.Given that the objective of the extremist organisations is to keep the people divided on communal or ethnic lines, it is no wonder that they always tend to fish in troubled waters of poverty and unemployment. It is the secular parties that need to be vigilant and active.

As for Sonal Shah, I agree with you that her latest stand of 'retracting' from VHP is certainly hollow. After all,she has a plumb position in Obama's team to 'enjoy' on. Vijay Prashad has done well to expose the skeletons in her cupboard .

Thank you once again,

R Maran
