Over the past two decades, no political party and alliance in South Asia has won — in a free and fair national election — the kind of overpowering victory that the Awami League and the Grand Alliance has just scored in Bangladesh. It has been a clean sweep for the Awami-led alliance; the BNP is routed, and the Jamaat-e-Islami has been blotted out. An editorial and a news item from the Hindu provides a broad perspective.
Should Islamabad fail to act, the UPA government must resist the temptation of relying solely on the United States to crank up the pressure. Instead, it must use the multilateral instruments at its disposal and work with all the permanent members of the UNSC to build pressure on Pakistan’s civilian government. In this connection, a suggestion made by CPI (M) general secretary Prakash Karat at the all-party meeting on Sunday must be taken seriously. It is to go — in the event of Pakistan failing to cooperate within a reasonable period after the evidence has been presented — to the United Nations Security Council in pursuance of Resolution 1373.The Hindu's editorial on a concrete response to the Mumbai Terror incidents.
Three articles on the Chandrayaan mission point out to the "positive science" aspects of the mission. But there is a cautionary note added to the story- that of the bogey of "national pride"/ "space race"/ "military use".

Gopal Raj writes in The Hindu about the aspects of science & technology, which are part of the mission. EPW's editorial gives an overview of the project and adds the cautionary note. The party that leads the United Progressive Alliance government is in a state of moral and political confusion. Demoralised by a string of Assembly election defeats, notably in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, and Karnataka, and besieged by economic and political troubles, the Congress has absolutely no idea where it is going. Perhaps feeling that it has nothing to lose during the murky period leading up to the 15th general election, which must be held no later than April-May 2009, it has resorted to political adventurism.
