The question of the money deposited in the swiss banks needs to be seen as a part of the totality of the neoliberal economic policies promoting financial deregulation. An article by Prof.C.P.Chandrasekhar which appeared in the Frontline does that succinctly.
While the issue of the huge sums of money deposited in the Swiss banks by Indians is being discussed frivolously in the mainstream media and the so called national parties of the country are pretending to be staging a (mock) fight over this issue ,the space for a ‘serious discussion’ over this issue is deliberately made to shrink. CPI (M) had raised the issue much earlier than it was raised by the BJP and has also suggested specific measuers in its election manifesto. ( but as Com.SItaram Yechury said in a jocular vein yesterday on a news channel that left doesn’t complain about it because it doesn’t believe in intellectual property rights!) The issue is definitely of national importance and worthy of a public debate but quite naturally its been reduced by the media to a favorite cliché of one of its superstar ‘ hamam mein sab nange hote hain’!
