IT is too soon to know exactly what material damage was caused by Hurricane Paloma, the third of intensity to hit us in less than 10 weeks during the present hurricane season but, facing this new blow dealt by nature, we Cubans can affirm that it is fortunate that we have a Revolution. Nobody died because, as usual, nobody was left unprotected.
Hurricane Paloma struck Cuba earlier in the month, compounding the damage and economic losses the island experienced in the last few months after hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Fidel Castro in his reflections about preparations for Hurricane Paloma in Cuba urged the people to learn from every such event about the consequences of climate change and ecological unbalance and rejected any offer of pious assistance from the chief of the empire. "We Cubans can affirm that it is fortunate that we have a Revolution. Nobody died because, as usual, nobody was left unprotected." observed Maria Julia Mayoral after Cuba bore the brunt of Hurricane Paloma.
