  • Commemorating Comrade P. Ramamurti   4 years 35 weeks ago

Today sept 20 is being celebrated in Tamilnadu as centenary birthday celebrations of Com PR who was born on this same day in 1908.

I was very touched and greatly moved to read the article penned by PR's beloved daughter R Vaigai ( PR named her two daughters after the rivers of Tamilnadu, one Vaigai that flows through Madurai which was the political nerve centre for PRs politics and from where Com PR was elected to the then Madras Legislative Assembly in 1952 ,EVEN while he was in jail (all his rivals lost their security deposit) and again PR was elected to the Lok sabha in 1967 as MP from Madurai which is even now represented by a CPI(M) MP since 1999 and the other daughter was named as Ponni after another river that flows through Tanjore district where PR was born and where PR inspired the peasants and agricultural workers).

Tears flowed down my cheek ,when I read several anectodes quoted by PR's daughter R Vaigai. Com PR was always selfless .He would defend the workers cause in courts of law,He would present their cases on his own, without any need for a separate lawyer.

On December 1968,when our party's 8th Congress was in progress in Cochin,Kerala, 44 agricultural workers were set upon with fire by the Land Lords in Kilvenmani in Tanjore district for asking for higher wages. PR was asked by the partys leadership immediately to rush the spot .the then Chief Minister of tamil nadu,Mr CN Annadurai consulted Com PR and appointed a separate commission to go into the wage problems faced by the agri.workers of east Tanjore district then.

Com R vaigai is right, when she says that PR addressed several hall meetings during the emergency.I ,myself, have heard PR's hall meetings during the emergency .

The public sector giant Neyveli Lignite Corporation was formed because of PR's efforts. It was Com PR who took up the cause of Lignite during one of his visits to socialist countries in 1950s and got the central govt then to get the lignite examined scientifically of its worth ,thus paving the way for its use to generate electricity from Neyveli Thermal power project. PR was the first to speak in Tamil on a budget discussion in Madras Legislative Assembly in 1952-57 , forcing the then finance minister C Subramaniam to praise PR for his ability to speak in Tamil even on economic issues.Till then every one was speaking in english only then).

The present Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee ,while presiding over unveiling of AKG's staute in parliament complex has gone on record to refer to Com PR as one of the leaders who was instrumental in laying the foundation for organising the CPI(M) in Delhi, when there was no organisation worth its name then.

Well, there is no end to write about Com PR. He was such a versatile leader who was not lacking in any field. He was a great organiser, a trade union leader(first GS of the CITU) , powerful speaker in many languages, a master tactician, a great idelogue,a great parliamentarian ,having served in state assembly as MLA , in Rajya sabha and the Lok sabha as MP).

I join Com R Vaigai and tens of thousands in Tamilnadu in paying my rich tributes to Com PR on this day.

I thank Pragoti for carrying this article and give its readers an opportunity to read about Com PR .

  • The False Promise of Multi-Polarity in International Relations   4 years 35 weeks ago

the article is full of contradictions. it is titled "false promise of multi-polarity'. but in between it says: "In a very real sense, the world is slowly but surely moving into a phase of multi-polarity and for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the USA finds its authority and power being seriously questioned". so what does one conclude? is the world becoming multi-polar or not? if it is then why is it a false promise? and if it is not then is multipolarity desirable compared to the current unipolar world? the author seems to be a thoroughly confused person.

  • The False Promise of Multi-Polarity in International Relations   4 years 35 weeks ago

The opinions expressed by Aniket Alam reflect how far he has moved from his roots. His equating the US with China, which despite all its problems continues to be a state dominated and regulated economy, and with Russia which is justifiably defending its own national interests against American MNC's encroaching on its hydrocarbon resources within its own territory (Siberia is a part of Russia isn't it?) by nationalizing them, betrays total ignorance. It is indeed pathetic that a former President of the SFI JNU Unit would expose such ideological and political naivete. Aniket has said: "They (i.e. Russia/China etc.) do not provide any alternative to the USA in terms of ideology, ethics, economic organisation or social justice. They just want to combat the hegemony of the pre-eminent power so that they can exercise their own power in exactly the same manner". Does Aniket support the tactics adopted by the Socialist states to combine in a United Front against Fascism alongwith capitalist countries like the US and Britain during the WW II, despite so many differences? The USSR under Stalin allied with the US and Britain despite no commonality in "ideology, ethics, economic organisation or social justice" in order to defeat the monster of fascism. US imperialism in today's world represents such a monster against which we have to form a broad united front. Aniket's views run counter to such an understanding. SFI JNU distances itself from this sectarian approach and laments the fact that a former leader of our organisation is espousing such views which are harmful for the Left movement of the country.

What Aniket Alam has displayed is not moralism but pure humbug. Underlying his puritanical sermons is deeprooted cynicism and abysmal ignorance. When the US was threatening Iran over the nuclear issue Aniket was educating us about the vices of the fundamentalist regime in Iran. During the elections in Pakistan he warned us about the impending fascist takeover of the country by the Islamists. Such ridiculous assessments of course fell flat when the fundamentalists were marginalised by the electorate. Notwithstanding such a gaffe Aniket started a tirade against China over the Tibet issue coinciding with the anti-China hype by the Western media. Once that subsided, he took up cudgels on behalf of Georgia, conveniently hiding the fact that it was the American poodle Sakaashvili who had attacked South Ossetia, and demonising Russia for its counter-offensive. Then comes this marvel on the futility of a multi-polar world. One wonders whether Aniket is realizing that in the process he is increasingly sounding as a US State Department spokesperson. I sincerely hope that Aniket does not go the same way as Jack Straw, who was once a self-proclaimed Marxist and later went on to become a crucial architect of the "war on terror" as Tony Blair's Foreign Secretary.

  • The False Promise of Multi-Polarity in International Relations   4 years 35 weeks ago

When the USSR existed, there was always a section within the Left who abused it relentlessly. The Trots derided "Stalinism" while the Maoists denounced the "social imperialism" of the USSR, to the extent that they started downplaying the imperialist threat. The fact is that after the collapse of the USSR, all shades of the Left, including the Trots and Maoists got weakened and pushed into oblivion and imperialism led by US established absolute dominance. Aniket seems to be a victim of the same syndrome in the current context. He finds Russia and China to be imperialist powers whose assertions vis-a-vis the US needs to be slighted. Does he celebrate the supine submission of the Indian Government before the Americans as something which needs to be celebrated? And if he is talking about a socialist alternative to imperialism, socialism will not drop from the heaven one fine morning. It will be born out of the conflicts and contradictions of the current phase of imperialism, particularly through the weakening of American hegemony.

  • Pragoti Exclusive: Interview with Patrick Gray   4 years 35 weeks ago

Some questions however remain:can anyone really guarantee another chernobyl or a similar disaster on a smaller scale will not occur? is our country, which i fought and died for, truly 'democratic' (as opposed to the old soviet union) and is therefore in a position to 'manage' nuclear energy better?is the 'international community' not a band of market fundamentalist imperialist cartel?

  • The False Promise of Multi-Polarity in International Relations   4 years 35 weeks ago

I have been reading Aniket's Alam's writings for some time now and it seems to be highly irritating. He seems to be in a constantly moralizing mode: just as Prabhat Patnaik somewhere called "messianic moralism". In other words if you are condemning everything under the sun, you are in effect condemning nothing. Everyone knows that in the absence of a Socialist world today, most countries in the world are capitalist. Any challenge to US imperialism therefore has to take the shape of inter-capitalist or inter-imperialist rivalry. Those who are interested in eventually going beyond capitalism, have to reckon with this real world situation. Aniket Alam is fully off the mark in equating EU and Japan with Russia and China because the former are subordinate allies of the US whereas the latter are potential rivals. Just because Russia is capitalist and China is not a pursuing a very convincing Socialist model does not mean we become cynical about whatever resistance they put up to the US. The future of democratisation of the world order is inconceivable without further intensification of the rivalry between US on the one hand and Russia-China on the other. In that sense multi-polarity, far from being an opium of the masses, is an achievable objective which needs to be fought for. By spreading cynicism about multi-polarity Aniket Alam is willy nilly strengthening those who aspire for the perpetuation of US hegemony and unilateralism in world affairs. One wonders why a person who does not seem to have the rudimentary idea of contemporary imperialism and indulges in such childish sermonizing is provided space in pragoti which i find to be an otherwise good website carrying very insightful material.

  • End of the road for the 123 agreement   4 years 35 weeks ago

The argument that India has a different interpretation of the 123 Agreement is quite meaningless. The disinformation campaign by Manmohan &Co and the mal information that have stated in the parliament for promoting this deal is not considered in this analysis; which would place things in totally different light; It would put the discord note by India govt to USG is merry face saving attempt as a result of the pressure mounted by the public.

Let us wait and see how the things are evolving.

    Thanks,
    Ravi

Mr/Miss anonymous.....as anonymous as SKJRC. the important constituents of this SKJRC are TMC (an old ally of the BJP) and SUCI ( a so called communist party)!!! such is the (self-contradictory, confused) character of SKJRC. a rainbow-organisation, devoid of any ideology (or a peaceful coexistence of communalism and 'communism'...eh...mr/miss anonymous?), only with a common anti-people anti CPI(M) agenda. the nature of this same alliance's "democratic" movement in singur and nandigram is as follows: first day of violence in nandigram, samerun bibi (a woman and a muslim) was attacked; sankar samanta- he was hacked to three pieces......indeed a democratic movement!! thousands of poor farmers, labourers, fishermen/women....children... evicted out of their homes- their only crime is that they are CPI(M) supporters. indeed SUCI and naxalites are pro-poor!!! what a theorisation...eh...mr/miss anonymous?

"..prescripts of capitalist globalisation..." mr/miss anonymous, there is something as "communist globalisation" too or what? setting up of "capital intensive" factory is globalisation? what an anonymous theory; never heard of such one. then setting up of heavy industries under mahalanobis plan was also globalisation? then india started globalisation from 1960's. this is what didi is teaching to SUCI and naxalites in SKJRC, anonymous?

  • Unfolding The Man-Nature Dialectic   4 years 35 weeks ago

While science cannot be left only to scientists, and while all humanity has an interest in understanding fundamental questions about the world we live in, I feel that a big obstacle to the popularization of science is the huge amount of pseudo-scientific gibberish that floats around feeding on people's desire for mystery and the distance that contemporary science has moved away from rough commonsense.

It is unfortunate that a person of the eminence of Sitaram Yechury has fallen into the same trap. While the question of man-nature dialectic and the materialist viewpoint he raises are of great importance, charlatans like Dan Brown or Capra can only mislead. Others have commented on Nataraja, let me give a link to what CERN says about Brown:
    http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/en/Spotlight/SpotlightAandD-en.html

Marxists classics on the philosophy of science like the 'Dialectics of Nature' or 'Materialism and Empiro-Criticism', whatever else be their shortcomings, were a result of a serious study of the science of their day. Let us stick to that tradition.

  • The siege at Singur   4 years 35 weeks ago

The majority of the farmers of Singur volunteered to give there land and excepted compensation offered. Mamata initially took a stand of opposing the growth and betterment of the state in the guise of "SKJRC". Initially decide to oppose the plant with a fake fasting that defied medical logic then realized that not many people would back her in controlling the area with outside help of armed criminals changed her stand to return of 1s 400 acres of land and then 300. The main objective is not too opposing the factory but to ensure that it does not come up. The threats used by the TMC supporters to drive away employees were captured live by local news channels. Also the when a few IT employees went to too meet Mamata Ji at Singur her trusted leftents threatened them of dire consequences if the did not go away before the count of 3 again in front of TV cams.

  • Unfolding The Man-Nature Dialectic   4 years 35 weeks ago

It is a subject of psedo scientist who always refer the shiva dance with the spin of an electron. The concept of SPIN of electron has come into effect after the Bohr's theory faces some problem in explaining some phenemona. It is the practice of our pseudo scientists who alway compare the scientific achievement with their mythological faith. This concept came somewhere in 1930s and we had the myth of Shiva dance much before that. Why don't those scientists relating the dance with spin predicted that the Bohr's hypothesis would face a kind of problem which Shiva dance would offer satisfactory explantion. I am surprised to find out how Sitaram is comparing it with dialectical unity between zero and infinity. Infinity refers to a large quntity in science and it cannot be considered as negation of zero or oppsite of zero.

  • Unfolding The Man-Nature Dialectic   4 years 35 weeks ago

Brilliant article by Com.Yechury. Especially when the 'universality of science' and materialist view of the world is severely attacked by the 'relativist postmodern brigade'. While combating the varied manifestations of Idealism,it is of utmost importance to a Marxist to defend materialism with political vigour and academic rigour. That is why The 'Nataraja' Reference and also the mention of Fritjof Capra ( who himself belongs to the long list of ' nirvana seeking-eastward looking intellectuals, thus very much qualified to be a postmodernist) towards the end of such a brilliant article is not in accordance with the overall logic of the article. But an article, written by one of the senior most leaders of the communist movement in India ,revitalizing the pertinent discussion of man-nature dialectic, is definitely a step of 'political and theoretical ( can we distinguish between these two?) importance!

  • Unfolding The Man-Nature Dialectic   4 years 36 weeks ago

The article is extremely well written. It draws from various science authors to highlight the philosophical importance of the ongoing experiment which every marxist must acknowledge as an important step in understanding the dialectics of nature. The results from the experiment should be continuously followed by all materilaists as it has the potential to tie up more than one loose end in the formation of the Universe which the rightist conservative forces try to exploit. However one cannot fail to notice the "Nataraja" view of the author where he tries to find new dialectics in ancient indian scriptures. I hope such baseless views do not become fodder for the communal forces which "fight" to take India to its "glorious past".

wonderful, that's just the word that came to me on reading this piece. heartening to see such sensitivity and sensibility, and above all the calling of a spade a spade.

wonderful again to note the absence of fundamentalist jingoism of GREEN !! GREEN !! ranted by dime-a-dozen pop-environmentalists running amok. instead here is a piece that is inclusive, which is the very essence of conservation and sustainable development. inclusiveness that includes and recognises the human, more often than not the poor populace, too as part of the biosphere.

and wonderful to see an environmentalist who isn't hypocritical like many who cry on camera for the cause of formalin soaked frog specimens dissected in bio-labs yet stay absolutely quiet on human butchery in fascist labs.

Whem it is the malicious objective of the Mamata and her gang of all colours from extreme right to extreme left of Naxal 'revolutionaries' to create another Nandigram-like situation by provoking the CPI(M)led Left and the LF govt, why should the Left and its Government fall into that trap.Mr Anonymous?

Tell us as to how you like the LF govt to handle the issue, instead of passing sweeping comments against the LF Govt.
