In Defense of Student Politics

Presi_photo.jpg
While many well meaning people in West Bengal, aided by the liberal media, are demanding a ban on student politics and student union elections, the need of the hour is to inculcate a new culture of student politics, which can be done only through mass mobilization of the students.

The Unbearable Weight of a Brutal Murder

sudipta gupta.jpg

Sudipto Gupta, a 23 year old bright student, was a leading left student activist of SFI committed to change the society for a better one. He made his choice early in life - to work for the betterment of society. In one of the most horrific incidents in Kolkata, he was beaten to death in police custody after he had courted arrest. What was his fault? He was not demanding anything for himself. He and his comrades were agitating peacefully demanding student union elections in West Bengal, which is a fundamental right of any student. The fact that a student has been beaten to death for demanding student union election shows the abyss that West Bengal has reached with the so called ‘pariborton’ in the state.

FDI in Retail: Benefiting Neo-liberalism, Harming People

FDI_Retail.jpg

The decision of the UPA government to open up the retail sector in the country to FDI is an example of the basic fallacy in the 'growth fetishism' of the votaries of neo-liberalism. While the government argues that this move will generate investor confidence in the Indian economy and lead the country to high growth, in reality the problems of the common people- deprivation, poverty and hunger- far from being ameliorated will actually be intensified.

Increase in Diesel Prices: Wrong Policy, Wrong Logic

diesel.jpg

The recent announcement by the government to increase the price of diesel by Rs 5/- is wrong. Over the last two years, the Indian economy is reeling under high inflation, which has not subsided even after major interventions by the RBI. In such a situation, increasing the price of diesel, which is an intermediate commodity for all kinds of production, is only going to give rise to a cascading effect on inflation.
